Random Fact

The song "Winter's End" was originally written in the key of Bm, but for a male singer. When DJ taught it to the band, the vocal part was too low for Katie to sing and the song was changed to the key of Em. It's a good thing women do not have deep manly voices.

Thanksgiving Eve

2008-12-06

DJ Scullin

It was a frigid cold night as I packed my things. The day usually ends at 5:00 PM on a Wednesday where I come from, but not tonight. I knew my day had just begun and would probably end nearer to 5:00 in the AM. Today was Thanksgiving Eve, one of the biggest bar nights of the year. Kids and adults, young and old all come home for this wonderful holiday to gorge on turkey and everything else. Before this magical feast happens, people like myself spend the eve finding familiar faces and old friends for a cocktail, a long conversation and most certainly a lot of laughs.

And now to give you a small tidbit of knowledge as to how my little sister and I work... I gave Katie a call around 5:30 from my Elkhorn apartment informing her that I spoke with the rest of the band about our Thanksgiving show attire. She said she was going with rocker jeans and a rocker Tee. I told her, "Uh Uh! This is a big night! I told Tim and Dan to dress up! I'm putting my business professional on!"

To which she replied in great aggravation, "You cannot call me 5 minutes before a show and tell me to change my entire outfit! I don't have time!"

Ah, I love it. Katie and I have brief moments of brother/sister love/hate. Apparently with women, a lot more time, effort and planning goes into a carefully crafted outfit. Who'd-a-thunk-it? You see with me, it is as easy as pick a top, pick a bottom and if time permits some undies and socks. Turns out I planted the seed of nervousness in Katie with all my talk of outfits. But the nerves quickly dissipated when a gargantuan number of friends and family showed up for our Velvet Lips Lounge performance. The nerves faded, the stage was set, the lights and the sound were dialed in and it was time to rock and roll! After the first set I was so happy to see my good friends from high school whom I haven't seen in years. I even saw my old college roommate, Joseph P-Crazy! Some things never change, as he demanded in great enthusiasm the Pink Floyd song, Wish You Were Here. Ah, how things never change.

You may not have known this, but everyone in the band (except myself) was deathly sick with colds, sore throats, and groggy heads. I sure as hell couldn't tell! Katie ... what a trooper, sick and tired and still performed a knock-out show. She sounded awful the next day, but despite our brief moment of conflict early the night before she still was a sweetheart and hid little thank you and love notes around our abode before she left.

All of us in Rivalry had an amazing time at the Thanksgiving Eve show. I'd like to send a special thanks to Eric, the Lips manager, for having us back. I look forward to playing there again soon. Laurel, my little-big sister... Thank you so much for singing with us. You did fantastic and I'm so happy to share the stage with you. I'd also like to thank Mario, Kari and their moms for their hard work at keeping track of our CDs. If you still want one, shoot me an email (rivalry@rivalrylive.com) with your name and address. Also I'd like to thank our sound man and guest guitarist, Darren, for his hard work on making the show sound incredible. It is a special treat when, as a performer, you have a wall of spectators inches away from you, cheering you on. Friday December 12th we'll be at Skatz in Madison and the next day at the Boar's Nest in Darian. We'd love to see you all there. Thanks everyone!
