The song "Winter's End" was originally written in the key of Bm, but for a male singer. When DJ taught it to the band, the vocal part was too low for Katie to sing and the song was changed to the key of Em. It's a good thing women do not have deep manly voices.
The powerhouse band Rivalry, featuring front woman Katie Scullin, got its first rumblings at a Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin tavern on Halloween, 2006. Katie and her brother/lead guitarist DJ Scullin booked themselves as Sibling Rivalry, an acoustic duo that served up Zeppelin, Tenacious D and Dolly Parton covers, as well as hand-penned tunes. The band dropped its genetically-exclusive prefix shortly after the addition of bassist Dan Howe and drummer Tim Schmitt in September, 2007. Howe and Schmitt contribute a combined 40 years plus experience and musical acumen, further backing Katie Scullin’s big voice with tightly woven arrangements. Each member’s diverse musical background feeds Rivalry’s ‘no-limits’ approach to style, genre and experimentation. Songs regularly incorporate elements of soul, indie and classic rock.
Their focus and flow established, Rivalry is currently recording their first album at Megatone Studios in Madison, Wisconsin. The compilation will feature originals “Rescue Me,” “Sunny Dayz” and “Monster”, among others. Rivalry continues to book performances regularly in a number of venues throughout Wisconsin. The band is currently unsigned.
